I like Caine and I far prefer the “he’s awake at the end” version of Inception but I take what he says with a big old grain of salt. I think only Nolan knows the truth.

okay, so watched inception again now that it’s out. i think i was wrong about it. not in the way the film is shot (which is exeptional) and certainly not the sublime brilliance of the soundtrack (hans zimmer is a genious).

i don’t think i gave the creativity of the film enough credit. i only saw it once in the theatrical release. on the heels of the huge hype machine and understandably comparing it to other “worlds within worlds” movies such as the matrix and particularly the thirteenth floor i sort of dismissed the content as just repackaged ideas.

i don’t feel that way anymore. after seeing it again with fresh eyes, the movie is just awesome. through and through it oozes creative brilliance. i love it.

i just have to say more on hans zimmer’s score. most movies attempt to do with a pop music soundtrack (i’ll argue that donnie darko actually succeeds in this aspect) what hans zimmer succeeded in doing with inception‘s score. he has created an overt and driving narrative force with his music that i haven’t seen in recent memory. the only movie that immediately jumps into mind is jaws (though i’m sure there have been others).

[my point isn’t to diminish any of john williams’ scores. he is a master of heroic anthem pieces (as well as tension and suspense) and his talent at movie scoring is pretty darn near perfection in every way.]
