ParticipantI mentioned this audio recording I made a year ago contemplating a scene from Star Wars – A New Hope. I apparently forgot to upload it even way back then when we recorded Show 170. Anyway, here it is.

ParticipantBy the way, I have a ton of self made recordings of my ramblings, etc… I should probably put everything up at some point.

Participantso i’m watching episode 2 and i get to the part where anakin returns to tatooine because of the visions about his mom.
anakin and padme come walking up to the lars homestead and there’s c-3po working outside and what is the first words out of his mouth? “oh, the maker!”
yes, at the end of ep. 3 bail organa orders captain antilles to “have the protocol droid’s mind wiped” and therefore the “maker” reference in ep. 4 isn’t a conscious reference to anakin/vader. but i think Jerry makes a very interesting observation about c-3po’s remarks about “the maker”.
many artistic works have “Christ” figures as a protagonist. Jerry got me thinking of anakin/vader as an “anti-Christ” figure that experiences both a spiritual death (stopping mace from killing palpatine thus acquiring the “vader” moniker”) and a physical one. his body is not only reduced to a limbless stump, it is also burned to a crisp on a literal burning hell of a planet.
anakin (the son) is resurrected by sidious (the father) with the dark side of the force completing the spiritual 1/3 of this unholy trinity.
sorry to ramble. i just thought Jerry’s point was really interesting to the story as a whole. yes, lucas is a crap director and can’t write dialogue and is simply recycling tried and true archetypes but the core story of anakin’s fall and redemption is (within this wonderfully constructed sci-fi/fantasy universe) quite fascinating.
so, good on you Jerry.
