Hey you guys, I made a video. Going to try to make it semi-regular, at least one a week, but we’ll see how that goes. Unfortunately the sound on this first one is cack, I didn’t yell like I normally do because I didn’t want to bug the other peeps in the park, plus there was wind. If there are any words you can’t pick up just give the time stamp and I’ll let you know what I was mumblilng. I was tempted to subtitle the whole thing like I did for the SOS-X videos, but … well, the video pretty much explains why I’m short on time for such frivolities these days.

Not to short on time to make a basic, unedited video though, so here it is, crap sound, crooked teeth and sleep-deprived eyeballs and all.

Obviously I meant “too short on time”. Obviously.

p.s. I got a couple crooked teeth, but, somewhat ironically, I’ve never had teeth troubles in my life. I mean, no root canals or fillings or any of that malarkey. I had a bad wisdom tooth out when I was 20 or so, but that shit’s just bad luck, not bad teethcare. That sucked pretty bad though. But my mum was a dental nurse so she set me up right to get complements every time I’ve ever visited the dentist. I guess she just didn’t believe in braces even though half the kids in my class had them back then.

Weird how seeing yourself in close up makes you self-conscious about nonsense like that. I guess newsreaders do deserve mammoth salaries after all.

That’s really cool, Bucho. You guys are nothing like I picture a foreign country outside the U.S. would be like. Your country looks very modern and civilized. Nobody shot you or tried to pee on you. No one screaming or getting raped.

I don’t know if I can be friends with you anymore. You make me doubt if my American arrogance is justified.

My essence still senses Bucho's women.

Lovely start, sir. Eh, don’t get all bent out of shape about appearances – none of us are effing movie stars spending gobs of money on our faces. We’re just regular joes.

I know it must be my own ignorance, or maybe I’m just an idiot, but it sounds like you’re saying “stage 2 maths and physics”. I don’t know if you’re joking or not – is that the degree you’re going for? To me, it sounds like you’ve got your bachelors degree and you’re going for a masters degree, but I don’t know, since I didn’t get any degree whatsoever.

Seriously though, I just like watching your stuff, regardless of topic. I suppose my “story” is sort of interesting, but since it’s still going on, it’s hard to see any interest in it from the outside, if that makes any sense. Sorry it took me a couple of days to comment – I kept meaning to come back to watch it, but things have been distracting, if you know what I mean.

Stage two is pretty much year two of a bachelor’s in NZ Universityese. I have a BSc that’s about 1/3 finished from back in the day, so that’s what I’m having a crack at. I guess in the lands of America you guys would call it sophomore year maybe. We don’t use that word except when refering to second albums, but I’ve heard it in literally a billion American TV shows and movies.

And you more or less stared death in the face. What you went through and are going through and the way you’re going through it is really pretty dang fascinating to say the least.

You sound like me in my first couple years of university, the killer years of expecting to half fail a course but eventually getting a good mark because everyone tanks on the final. You call them papers, that sounds more official than here.

If you ever need help with logic maths or any computing based courses let me know. I know a bit about environmental science and astronomy as well if you end up with anything like that. Statistics too.

Where the hell is Novitzky anyways

Wow, that sounds like a whole lot of physics. I know it’s obvious that you want to graduate, or achieve commencement, or be granted school-departureness or whatever it is you Kiwis call that shite, but what’s your main goal? Like, are you planning to be all physicsy in your job? Tell us more about what you want to be when you grow up. Maybe it’ll give me some ideas, because I still don’t know what I’m doing.

That shit made me smile though. I don’t know who you’re channeling, but it’s definitely very familiar that some voices just come out of me with no warning. It’s weird and strange and fun.

Yeah, in my first semester especially I felt like I was trying to outrun an avalanche a lot of the time. Most of my classmates had a pretty solid grounding because they did Stage One last year or the year prior, whereas I did it in 1997. Set myself a pretty steep hill to climb, but I made it somehow. We’re actually doing 4 weeks of astronomy as part of the Quantum Physics course – it’s “Modern Physics” really, so a couple of weeks on general and special relativity, then 6 on Quantum, then 4 on Astronomy. Is your degree in computer science?

I’m pretty bad at stats. I had to bone up some due to the experimental analysis stuff in the laboratory component of the Physics courses and that stats stuff doesn’t stick as well in the old brainbox as other malarkey does.

And this … this is Novitzky – http://mmajunkie.com/2015/08/ufcs-jeff-novitzky-smell-test-among-usadas-tools-in-rooting-out-ped-offenders

I feel like even if it’s not Will Ferrell or Jim Carrey, it’s channeling them to some extent. Those are the guys who make that kind of strident vocalising funny.

To be honest I’m not 100% sure what’s at the end of the degree. A lot of graduates with Physics degrees end up going into other fields because the type of applied math and modelling you learn in Physics and the Math papers that go along with it is also readily applicable to fields like Engineering, IT and Finance. I know guys and gals who have Physics degrees from Auckland who’ve ended up in all sorts of surprising places. Some are even actual Physicists, which I’d love to do if I could swing it, but I’m not sure that’s realistic for me. It’s very possible I end up taking extra papers in either Maths or Computer Science, either to make my degree a conjoint, or as a graduate diploma, to round it out and increase my options.

I’m just trying to blow some doors open in other fields than construction, and for 2015 at least that means just trying to get some good grades.

They gave me a “Bachelors of Science with Specialization in Computing Science” so yeah B.Sc computing science.

I was in the “don’t know what the fuck I’m going to do with this degree boat” until my fourth year, when I decided to go into health research. It’s an application of the logical and algorithmic thinking I learned through the computing degree. I recommend talking to other undergrads or graduates to see what they have done with the degrees, also find something you can be passionate about too of course

Just watched the first one today.

It’s amazing, you live on the Earth too! I recognize things that look like things I recognize. But where the fuck were the hobbits? Don’t they like valet your car or anything?

I like that you are learning things. I don’t like that you don’t know what’s going to happen. What kinda shit is that? Who the fuck makes a video without knowing the outcome? don’t you plan or script?

In the second video you are talking a lot about the failed attempts due to wind noise. I like that you were trying when you “felt it”, and it would be nice if you could fix your situation/setup to where you could keep doing it that way. Why not build a wind filter? Cheap foam and materials go a very very long way. Or a super insanely cheap external mic.

I still like hearing about your progress, but this one felt like you had done it a few times. You had a very ‘rehash’ sound to the way you talked about the things. I do like the setup here, the talking head thing worked fine because the framing was decent. You like wearing headphones. And doing papers. I still like the on campus video a bit better, maybe it was the natural drive to record something. –But, it wasn’t “not entertaining”… this one just felt like you felt like you needed to do it less than wanted to. I figure that’s the failed setup/attempts getting at you.

This all reminds me that I have all of this cool portable shit to record on, and I’m not doing a damn thing. Without the “dude” bit, your old guy impression sound like one of the old barbershop characters that Eddie Murphy does in “Coming to America”.

Oh, and i wish I had bothered to learn things before I had so much to accomplish. Not 10 minutes of college under my belt. But I know where some colleges are located.
