Yeah, so a few weeks ago, April got her bonus, and for some pre-surgery goodwill, she relented to buying a new TV. I’ve made comments on many occasions that I thought that 52″ was too small, not really thinking that she’d actually want to go with a bigger TV, but I was wrong! I made the comment that I thought that it didn’t make sense to buy a new TV right now without 4k, so we went with a 65″ LG 3D 4K TV that was on sale at Best Buy, and holy shit it is awesome. There’s not a whole lot of 4k content at all, so that’s not the big thing, but the fact that it is 240 hz (or the fact that the processing power in the set is just overall better than a set from 2007), everything just looks better.

But the 3D! Now I can understand why some people don’t like it, especially with active shutter glasses that weigh a lot, but since these are passive like the Real 3D glasses in the theater, I’ve actually forgotten I had them on, and Guardians in particular is just so damn much fun in 3D! April has never liked 3D either, so I think we’ve only seen a handful of 3D movies in the theater, but she’s been enjoying it so much that she got on Amazon and started ordering 3D Blu-Rays. For someone like her to do that, especially after saying that 3D in the theater gave her a headache, I think says a lot with how far it’s come.

Now, I’ll admit, sometimes it’s just not warranted. Like, at all. Prometheus, for example, was so subtle in its 3D use that it just didn’t add much to the movie. But Finding Nemo, holy shit that’s awesome!

    So, what say you?

I’m too broke with other things to even think about a TV like this. But I’m waiting to replace any TV in the house, until we buy pretty much what you just described so that we can play whatever we are interested in at the time. For now, I’m into all of my other crap.

I’d need to watch some newer 3D stuff to have an opinion on it really, but Nemo is exactly the kind of thing I’d really like to watch on it.

I’ve never found 3D immersive, only distracting.

    First obstacle:
Was it filmed in 3D? Was it post-converted? Is the theater properly calibrated based on the first two questions?

    Second obstacle (glasses and gimmick):
I hate active shutter with so much hate. And I hate 3D where it’s not completely a matter of depth (gimmicks that break the fourth wall.)

Now, that being said. I don’t doubt the next TV I buy will be 3D capable. I’ve even gone so far as to buy a lot of blockbusters in 3D. New release Tuesday can see great deals on 2D+3D+DVD+Digital packages.

I’d rather watch movies at home anyway so I don’t doubt I’d enjoy 3D at home. I’m just not in a rush to get 3D like I was to get Blu-ray and HD audio.

I’d love for you to keep giving opinions on 3D movies you’ve watched at home, though. How strong is the effect? Does it have that post-conversion “flat” or “dark” problem? Stuff like that.

I haven’t got 3D but I recently had surgery and now have some 36DDs. Does that count?

But the question is, do your underwear still fit the same?

I’ve only watched a few so far. Guardians was post conversion, but was really amazing, and just totally surprising in the theater and at home. Nemo was pretty badass, but Avatar so far, is the clear winner. I’m not really into watching that one all the time like I was when it first came out (I think I’ve mentioned how I get addicted to some movies for a while), but it makes a really good demo disc. One of the things that I really like about it is how it starts off with some crazy depth kinda shots, and then it sorta mellows out, and almost lets you get used to it, and then by the time the crescendos hit toward the end, you’re ready to see some wacky cool shit.

I bought The Wolverine not knowing it was 3D, but I haven’t watched it yet. April bought the two Train Your Dragon movies, but haven’t watched those yet either. I believe The Wolverine was done in post, so it’ll be interesting to watch at some point.

It really is sort of a gimmick, when it’s all said and done, but I just really enjoyed the Guardians presentation so much in the theater it just made sense for us to get the 3d TV since it was on sale.
