ParticipantAny of y’all ever see that movie Helvetica? I remember when it came out I was all, “Who gives a shit about fonts bro, all I give a shit about is PARTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! Bro.”
But then I started finding out I have favourite fonts. Either on documents or as text or titles on a video, except I’m not a graphics pro* or a Larkitect so who gives a crap what I think, I’m more interested in what graphics pros and Larkitects like or dislike.
* For the record. I consider you a graphics pro Rob. I know you don’t do that professionally anymore like The Captain and Jerry do, but I still consider you one. And that’s what really matters.
(p.s. I was a gentleman of Calibri for the last couple of years but lately I’ve been spicing up my life with some Tahoma and even getting back to basics with a touch of good old, reliable Arial.)
Here’s the movie by the way. Don’t say I never did anything nice for you guys.

ParticipantI’ve watched that. It was interesting.
I use Menlo for pic captions. Menlo has a casual touch to it but is still very readable.
I use Avenir for everything else. A sans serif font. The crispness and lack of kerning has made it a favorite of mine for the last few years. Probably more than a few now that I think about it.
Now, when I want to get a little loose I do like me some Noteworthy.
Georgia Is my goto serif font.
And call me old-fashioned but nothing beats Courier For plain text. Okay, that’s not true. There’s lots that do. But it’s just so accessible because it’s installed on everything.
That’s something I’d like to know. You guy’s favorite plain text font.

ParticipantWhat makes you think I’m some sort of graphics expert? I like simple clean fonts. Like Calibri on a Mac. Not sure that makes me a pro.

ParticipantI never even heard of Menlo or Avenir Lark, pretty sure you’re just making those up. I don’t really use much plain text but Courier is old faithful when I do.
I thought you were doing graphics when you worked for that place you and Jerry and Bryan all worked for at the same time Robby. Mango was it? Something like that.

ParticipantI did work there, but Jerry was the ol’ graphics guy there. Bryan has always been super solid, too. I think I have an eye for it, to a certain extent, but don’t have the patience to really deliver a finished product. In fact, it’s sort of that way with everything for me, which is why I haven’t finished my book ideas, or written a song in years, or rarely do more than put a quick little image together for something (like cover art for something in iTunes). It’s a mixture of straight up laziness and a fear of failure, or better, a standard in my own head of quality that I don’t always believe I can achieve.

Participant@ Lark — Avenir does look pretty sweet Lark. I’ve never even considered paying for a font, but then I ain’t no Larkitect.
@ Rob — I guess I think of Bryan as a graphics guy because even though he’s more of a general all-round internet guy he’s worked a ton with graphics and has strong specific tastes that are always interesting. And for some reason I thought you three were all graphicking at Mango, although I can’t remember why I thought that. Just a dumb assumption I made at some point I guess. I’m happy you go with Calibri though. I don’t think I’ve seen much of Calibri being mentioned in favourite fonts discussions but it’s been a go-to for me.

KeymasterWhen the fuck did I get demoted around here?

ParticipantBucho, I found it installed when I made the switch from windows to Mac. I didn’t go out and license it or anything.

ParticipantI’m going to need to see a receipt Lark. There’s something fishy about your story and I smell a rat. And you know what they say about rats that smell fishy.
When the fuck did I get demoted around here?
You know what I mean Lieutenant. I know you do more than graphics, but your eye for design is still a significant part of your job, right?

KeymasterThat’s what I meant… it’s weird to me that it’s not more commonly known; it feels like I toot my own horn all of the time. Without writing my biography here, I’ve been in a design role (including Creative Director during the height of SOS) since 1999. I’ve actually been doing it the longest among the group as far as I know.
I think maybe where people get confused is that A) Jerry does more art, even outside of his day job and B) I’m always into a lot of other stuff both as part of and outside of my job that makes me seem more technical (video, front-end dev, computery crap)… but yep, I’m in design.

ParticipantBucho, dont know what this has to do with fonts but you wanted to see a receipt.

ParticipantThat’ll do Lark old chap. That’ll do.

Right, so your eye for design must have an opinion on fonts. I meeeeeeeeeean, how could it not?
Wait … to be honest this would be better answered in in-car video form, so you could cut to examples visually as you talk. Because you don’t already have other projects/time commitments you’re working on right now.

ParticipantBucho, that would show a level of commitment not seen since Han Solo made the Kessel in less than 12 parsecs. Knocking a distance of 6 parsecs off the traditional 18 parsec route.
So Captain, are you a 12 parsec Kessel run type of guy? Or are you a smuggler that drops his shipment at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser?

ParticipantI downloaded a shit tonne of free fonts back when I was on Red Bubble…I have too many to comfortably cycle through to find the one I want and most are unusably shite anyways….I’ve had to make notes on my phone for which fonts I use for which characters on Whale Fist though. In fairness though, i do have some nice ones…
Incidently, I had a letter delivered the other week. It was printed with our name and address on the envelope and committed that immortal sin of using the Comic-Sans font. “What unprofessional bunch of amateurs uses the Comic-Sans font” thinks I. I opened it up and it was a local council news letter from our Labour party council. I tutted and thought “How amateurish and unprofessional”
