Version3
KeymasterYes I did record 3 times today. Sorry, I just had it in me. I bet I record 0 times tomorrow.
I think this one is the slightly more entertaining of the three anyway. it was still updating a bit ago

ParticipantI enjoyed this. It’s strange, but it really seems to be the same sort of thing that makes the show so fun – too much preparation leads to things not sounding natural.

KeymasterMaybe, but this video has been watched substantially less than all of my other videos. So that leads me to believe that the less-focused coupled with my longer runtimes don’t work as well for even the folks on this site that already know me; so they wouldn’t do well with the general public. It’s funny, I felt like coming off of this, that it was by far the most entertaining one. Granted I haven’t watched it, so I don’t know that to be true.
My guess is, that with the flurry of all of us posting driving videos to the site suddenly, the less focused, long runtime video may not be one that suits my style as well. So what did any of you like or dislike about the 5 distinctly different videos I’ve posted recently?
1. The semi-artistic or presentation focused videos. I posted a super fast drive video, and a video of driving around Mt Rainier late in the day. The Rainier video seems to have done pretty well, but it was quite a bit shorter.
2. The driving and talking about something with a point video. This one was long, but I had some objectives, I talked a lot about my experience, and I took much longer to put this together because it includes much more varied footage.
3. The Walking to Work video: This one is pretty spontaneous, if not just all over the place. It’s a less than normal view, so it’s got that going for it, but it still has a longer runtime and suffers in the sound department. It’s pretty low on the views too.
4. The observing real-life video. This is a lunch with Garza. It’s long, it’s us talking like we do at any given lunch anyway, and it’s done surprisingly well with you guys as it’s got the highest views of all. Not sure why that is, could it be starts and stops (with windows/page closes and manual resuming)?
5. The pointless chatter driving video (found on this page). This is more inline with the ‘test’ videos that aren’t about reviews that have been posted here. This one still suffers from a longer runtime, and although I felt it was more entertaining to create, it may be less of what people either expect of me, or may stray too far into the realm of what makes Jerry and/or Robby easier and more fun to watch. Not having someone to play off of, or trying harder to be entertaining may be pretty evident in this video, but I don’t think that contributes to lower view numbers (since someone would have to watch it to make that decision). Maybe it’s because at the time of it’s posting, it was more-or-less ‘white noise’ with so much similar stuff being posted by both me and Jerry at the same time.
Interested in thoughts on this.

KeymasterI don’t think I’m feeling the need to have a comedy outlet on my drive home, and maybe that contributes to this one feeling a bit forced. For me, I think I just want to shoot some video on my GoPro because I think it’s cool. That doesn’t mean the material will be cool… but having it feels neat. On the other hand, as I’ve said before, my life really isn’t extreme enough to even justify owning one of these, much less trying to find reasons to use it.

ParticipantThe only reason I haven’t watched it yet is because I haven’t found time. I intend to watch the hell out of it, and in fact two other podcasts of which I’m also a long-time fan have released videos in the last couple of weeks and I haven’t watched them yet either. And one of them is less than 5 minutes long. And those other podcasts are putting out professionally produced malarkey and yet I’m still watching the vids you guys put out before I watch theirs. Because I’m still more hardcore into the SOS than any of the other 87 podcasts I pay attention to bro.
I am catching up – watched Rob’s The World’s End review plus the last 22 minutes of Lunch With Garza plus one of Jerry’s vids which was 17 minutes while exporting and uploading the latest versions of my latest Road Reviewseses – it’s just the case that a couple of weeks ago I suddenly gave myself a ton of homework trying to learn how to make my road reviews videos not completely suck, and then a couple of days later there came the flood of vids from you guys and the other shows I follow, and then there’s a family thing going on which means I’m spending a lot of time supporting my wife and her family lately and less time online.
On the road reviews side at least I think I’ve found a format I can live with for a little while so with that ground work done on my end I’ll have more time to watch other stuff.

ParticipantI watched everything that everybody has done so far on this site.
Bryan, I think that of all the videos that you’ve posted so far, I think that the drive home (this one) was my fave. I actually thought that the lunch one was pretty entertaining too, but I think it suffered from the wind noise and the fact that I actually wanted to see what you guys were eating. Maybe that’s just because I’m a foodie and I wanted to see it.
But yeah, the off-the-cuff stuff is fun. That’s just me, I guess.

ParticipantI just watched the first 600 seconds (at work on my super low-res phone) and give all 600 seconds an A. But even on my dumbphone I love that the wide field of the GoPro puts a lot of interesting surroundings on my screen. I’ve been trying to do the same with my vids – to have more than just my dumbface be featured. I also find your videos and Jerry’s come across a little better than mine and Rob’s because you guys aren’t wearing sunglasses. It’s a small detail I didn’t think would make a difference but I see now it does.
But anyway, I like the first bit of this a lot and the flappy tits bit was particularly hilariousnessness.

ParticipantOh yeah, and what you said about it feeling “forced”, I don’t get that vibe at all. It’s clear you’re aiming not to be boring, but that’s definitely a good thing. You’re asking people to spend their precious visual entertainment time on you instead of one of the billion thousand other options out there. If you want peeps to care about what you’re communicating it only makes sense that you should care too.

KeymasterBucho, I think you get the impression that I was complaining that my little video didn’t make it in front of your eyes with alarmingly high importance. I was really noting that at the time I posted it, the content and the runtime made me think that this one would be the better of them… and then the stats said it wasn’t. Then when I watched it again, and although I laughed, it looked more like I was trying to be funny, rather than just being funny. So that’s more the reason for my asking what works better for me. It’s not “why don’t you guys love me and my funny anymore?”

That’s funny to me, because after a day of doing a few videos (more after watching back the day of videos), it felt most to me like I was trying to have a reason to do one “like everyone else”. So that surprises me.

Oh, I didn’t make it to appeal to any masses of anything. In fact, it’s not even listed public, it’s view with link only. I just made it for you silly fuckers.

KeymasterBut after this morning… I have a theory. It’s being HERE. This place is so unfunny, so boring that I think that part of me if feeling kinda out of practice. So I’m being kinda hard on myself. It’s even worse, because if I watch it in the frame of mind I end up being in after being at work and in town with all of these people, it looks more to me like I’m just trying too hard.
I came to this conclusion because this morning I had a FaceTime call with my friend Chris, and some of my co-workers from Michaels. After a few minutes, I was relaxed, dominating the conversation, and making them laugh as I made fun of the people around me, pointed things out about Seattle and all that. I talked with them all the way in to work (yes, while driving) and it worked surprisingly well. What I found was, that I was naturally being funny for about a half hour after that, making people at the shuttle stop laugh as I made fun of a lot of the wannabe cosplay kids in town for the PAX convention. That’s when it hit me. I’m not just out of practice, looking at it/listening to it when I’m in a work frame of mind makes me look weird doing it. It’s like when you see yourself in a photo but aren’t used to it. You say “that’s not me”, or you hate seeing yourself on video all that.
In short, I’m going through exactly what I went through when we started SOS. Where I thought I sounded weird, mumbled too much and generally wasn’t that funny. I was trying too hard as I heard myself and even worse after hearing it played back. Then I got over it, got comfortable and was fine. BTW, listening back to the early shows, it’s not my imagination, I was more different than the others; it was affecting me. So here, as I’m on the downside of the SOS peak, where I’ve left that behind, it’s SO much more apparent what’s missing. And since I don’t talk to myself or entertain myself the same way Jerry and Rob do, I’m even MORE out of practice. So it looks weird to see it (the video far above was after relaxing a bit and getting back into it).
I think I hate Seattle. Really, I feel like I’m changing into something totally fucking boring already.

ParticipantI didn’t think it was personal or that you were complaining at all Captain. I thought you were being your typically analytical cool-headed self in looking at the results of what you’ve been producing and I just wanted to say where I in particular was at because not long ago I pretty much said I would watch all the video you guys could deliver, and then I didn’t. Yet. I don’t want you guys to think just because I haven’t gotten to something yet that I’m not into it is all. I love that this in-car/on-a-stick video thing has sprung up around this joint lately and I don’t want it to stop because of any kind of sitcom-like hilarious miscommunications.
I also think you’re way harder on yourself about being entertaining than you should be. I haven’t been bored for a second of either of the in-car vids or the on-a-stick vid. The Lunch With Garza only suffered technically, not because of you or Michael being unentertaining. If this is you in Unisnpired Mode then you in Uninspired Mode is still more entertaining to me than 99.8% of other podcasters and web video folks at the tops of their game. And I should know. I listen to ALL of them.
But you’ve hit on the same thing I was saying to Jerry. If you and he and Rob can make a little time once in a while you can easily do shows together over The Internet. A lot of successful podcasts work this way and you’ve just said you find can be “on” over The Internet, and even if it’s not the ideal of you, Rob and Jerry in the same room, I bet you’d have a ton of fun doing it, and that’d translate into fun for the listeners. The only question, and it’s The Big Question, is whether the three of you can make the time at the same time.

KeymasterWe have been working on such a thing, and it turns out it’s kinda hard to make time for it (at the same time). My being from a less distant future (2 hours) doesn’t help either.

All your voice stuff is funny too – the little stuff like “There’s lights in my eyes.” Almost Jerky Boys-ish.

With both the driving and walking vids while the main thing I’m watching for is to hear what you’re going to say I really like how you try to present them in a way which shows off your surroundings.
In the walking vid my favourite bits visually were when you’d swing the camera around and show the other beings and structures and assorted Seattleness. In the driving vids I like that even in the video without the forward-facing cam you use your GoPro’s field to have you be featured but there are other visually interesting things going on. I’ve tried to accomodate some of that idea into my videos too – catching back window action so there’s something visually interesting going on, otherwise it may as well be audio.
For me there’s not a whole lot of difference between starting out with some points to make or starting out with only random thoughts. Rob has always been good at coming in with ideas to talk about – movies, food, MMA or boobies usually – and talking about them while allowing himself to tangent off wherever his mind takes him, and you’re good at that too.

KeymasterI need more cameras so that I can do simultaneous views. It’s not necessary, but cool anyway.
