ParticipantThe Dark Knight Rises. I review it. Thoroughly. And with spoilers. Don’t listen if you haven’t watched it.

EDIT: So April and I watched it again. Click below for my short 2nd mini-review.

ParticipantWhere you say not having intimate knowledge of the mythos is probably an advantage to enjoying this film, I think you’re right. Seems like it’s the same way with the first Transformers film. I have no investment in those worlds so I go into them with a tabula rasa and let a director scribble whatever they want on there. With the prequels though I had a huge investment in Star Wars so they fucked me right off.
I don’t disagree with most of the actual film-making problems except where you say Talia undermines the idea that Bane is really smart. The way I took it was he was her general. He’s charged with a mission she’s come up with but he’s a good part of planning and executing that mission. Generals are often very smart, in fact very often smarter than their leaders. I didn’t think he was an idiot just because she was his boss. He did seem less badass though.
Curious to see how you take it on a second watch though, and how I’ll take it too. I didn’t see it in IMax so maybe going again this weekend to see it BIG.

ParticipantI think you are right Rob, about knowing the whole back story from the comics. I never read them, but very much enjoyed the movie, but from listening to this I can see how those are pretty big “fuck you” to the comics and dedicated Batman enthusiasts.

ParticipantI wouldn’t say “fuck you” per se – I think Batman and Robin would be considered a bigger fuck you than Rises. I guess that’s what happens when you try to tie a trilogy up. I understand trying to make it more realistic, but instead of making changes inside the world he changed the world.
I’m seeing it again on Friday, so it’ll be interesting to see it with fresh eyes taken from the recently captured body of an endangered Iberian Lynx.
And Bucho, to me it absolutely cheapens Bane’s character. Awww, Bane’s just a big loveable teddy bear. What?!

Well, sure, he’s less badass than he seems at first but not much. He’s not just a big loveable teddy bear, he’s more a big lovesick monster. Lovesick as in mentally ill. As in a psychopath who’s wrecked and taken counteless lives. He’s not less terrifying just because Talia is his boss. He still did all those horrendous things and is still capable and motivated to do many more horrendous things.
But yeah, it would have been cooler if he was the boss.
Another thing about Rises that’s odd is that while I think Nolan shoots the action better than he did in The Dark Knight, the fistfights themselves are very un-ninjatastic. For highly trained martial artists Bats and Bane sure do good impressions of drunken bears when they get to a-swingin’. I thought some of the fights in TDK were messily handled, but at least there was some energy to them. The Bats/Bane fights don’t get interesting until Bane’s mask gets fucked up and he loses his cool.

Yeah, now THAT was pretty badass, I must say.

The longer lost post that I made on the other thread dealt with this. I really wanted to see a Bane that was hell bent on punishing Batman for trying to be great, for trying to stand in his way. This speed and fury that he unleashes right after this got me cheering for Bane to kick his ass… I only wish that it had been channeled through an experienced world-class assassin, rather than a pissed off monster. I too have problems with the fights in this movie, but not enough to ruin it. It’s just enough to make me a bit annoyed that this detail was over looked.
