Participanthere’s the link to the article but it’s short so i’ll just quote the whole thing in here.
and if you’re too lazy to read it basically kung fu panda 2 and pirates 4 got 45 and 46 percent (respectively) of revenue from their 3D screens. with 45% being the lowest since despicable me which showed on far fewer screens than panda 2. so maybe there’s hope for us yet that the hollywood big-shots will realize not everything needs to be in 3D.
Quote:Wall Street is not impressed by the $68 million, five-day opening of DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 2.”As of midday trading Tuesday, DreamWorks stock was down over 4 percent. Factoring in a drop of over 5 percent on Friday, the stock is at a two-year low.
Investors have been steadily hammering DreamWorks stock for every one of the studio’s movie openings since “How to Train Your Dragon” debuted in March of last year.
But the damage Tuesday spread beyond DreamWorks.
With the movie commanding only 45 percent of its premiere revenue from 3D — a week after Disney’s fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” endured similarly lackluster performance with the format — Wall Street seems to be down on 3D, too, now.
Shares of RealD were down more than 12 percent Tuesday.
“Early sales data Friday … made it clear that DWA’s ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ would sell more 2D tickets than 3D tickets,” wrote BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield. “However, the final tally was even worse than we imagined, with only 45 percent of box office coming from 3D and only 36 percent of attendees coming from 3D presentations (45 percent is the lowest 3D box office share since ‘Despicable Me’ last summer, which had significantly fewer 3D screens than ‘Kung Fu Panda 2”).
Share prices for 3D technology company RealD have been climbing a steep incline for a year, growing from $15.63 a share 52 weeks ago to a high of $35.60.
However, there is fear among analysts that the domestic market is souring on 3D — RealD prices will close at only around $27 per share Monday.
Last weekend, only 46 percent of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'” premiere audience came from 3D revenue.

ParticipantI can’t stand 3D movies. It gives me a headache, and it adds absolutely nothing to the movie for me.

Participant3D can work IMO. I loved Avatar and thought the 3D really brought something to the film. I am however getting really peeved at the way we are being forced to watch 3D.
I took my eldest daughter to see Pirates 4 the other day. The 2D sold out just as I got to the ticket booth. It then took me about 15 minutes to work out from the not-very-helpful viewing times screen that the next 2D showing was 4 hours later. The 3D version had showings every 20 minutes and so I was forced to see it in 3D.
It had to be the worse 3D i have ever seen. Some of the jungle shots showed out of focus jungle fronds in the foreground with us watching the in-focus main characters through them. When 3D puts these blurred out of focus fronds literally just in front of your nose, it fails. Big time!!
Done correctly as an occasional novelty, it can work. I’m thinking of Jaws 3D or Freddy 5. Not the norm, just a one off special movie to stand out from the crowd.
Star Wars 3D coming over the next few years might work, but I doubt it. I will be going to see them all, just because it is Star Wars on the big screen….and I love me some Star wars. Some of you may have heard the story about how far I am willing to put myself in danger for Star Wars….
I may explain it all one day…..anyway. Off track. 3D is proving to be popular. Not because it’s what the viewing public want, but because show times and cinema big-wigs are forcing us to eat it up.
If I could open a cinema chain that offered next to zero 3D showings, I’m sure I could wipe the floor of all the big UK chains!
Rant over…

Participantthe only movies i’ve seen where i thought the 3d worked was avatar and tron: legacy.
there are two reasons those movies worked for me: they were shot in 3d and weren’t victim to the horrendous practice of post-production conversion; and the 3d effect (most of the 3d in avatar and all of the 3d in tron) was with depth of field with very few instances of having to focus your eyes in front of the screen at ‘protruding’ images.
i won’t be going to the theater to see any of the post-converted star wars. once i get those on blu-ray, then that’s it for me until we have holographic displays.
but of all the attempts at post-conversioin 3d, i’m sure star wars will be the best example of how to do post-conversion properly.

ParticipantNow if a movie is only available in 3D, I’m just waiting until it moves out of the main theaters to where it’s shown in 2D.
If there’s more to the Star Wars story than what we’ve already heard, you simply have to record that some time and send it to me.

Participantand don’t forget to take a quick look up at the projection booth when the movie starts (unless you’re not the kind to complain and get a refund then don’t look at all or it’ll bug you the whole movie). if it’s a 2d movie you should see only one projection on the glass. not two. i haven’t seen this at the local IMAX but noticed this when leaving a Regal Cinema.
2 projection beams means the projectionist didn’t change lenses and your 2d movie will be darker than intended.

ParticipantI tend to avoid Regal whenever I can. Their parking isn’t that great and they’re more expensive. I usually go to a little local theater instead.

Participanti normally stay away, too. family gave us gift cards even though they know we go to the IMAX (and before that, the Camelot) and haven’t used the Regal for years. don’t they understand all movie houses aren’t created equal?

ParticipantI heard that the new X men movie was viewed by the same amount of people as the Thor movie on thier first week. But made about 15 million (ish….I’m going from memory) less dollars than Thor. The reason was that X Men was only available at the cheaper to view 2D. You can see why they are doing it…..to justify a more expensive ticket and make profits.
I also heard that cinema chains are forcing the movie industry to make the films in 3D to increase their profits.
I also heard that if Phantom Menace is a flop in 3D, the others won’t be made. There is a campaign to get people to NOT go see Phantom Menace in 3D when released. Personally, given the choice of all 6 in 3D on the big screen or nothing….I’ll see all 6 in 3D.
I also just heard a dog barking outside….but that isn’t relevant to this, or any other thread!

KeymasterWe could start a dog barking thread if that would help you?
We could also start a new thread about habits you fall into at your desk, like pen chewing, humming the William Tell Overture, or shooting blood at your co-workers out of your urethra.

ParticipantI drive machinary in my job….but I do have some bad habits in my job. Like that one time when I had a chocolate dessert and I spilled some on the seat. I told the guy who got on my machine for the next shift that I had followed through! That was fun….but not really a habit. I only did that the one time…
BIG JOBBIESJune 16, 2011 at 6:23 pm #29590Version3
KeymasterMaybe you should make that a habit then. Do it every day for 3 weeks, and you’ll find it will be automatic after that! You won’t even have to think about it!

ParticipantIt’s the same way with the new premium paperback format. For those not familiar with it, it’s half-way between a mass-market paperback and a trade paperback. A lot of books now, instead of being published in mass-market paperback format, are being published in premium paperback format. It costs them an extra 25 or 50 cents per book to publish them that way, then they charge $2 more, so they can make more money.
