I liked it a lot. Everything about it is drenched in coolness. It’s been bagged for not enough chemistry with Foxx and Farrell and for the story being even more simple than some of the tv series episodes but fuck that, it still kicks a lot of ass.
The sound is one of the best features, these uberpowerful boats and the hardcore guns seem almost physical and even though I won’t buy the soundtrack it’s still used real well to push the momentum. Colin Farrell’s hairstyles (face and head) are open for ridicule until you remember he’s a vice cop, he has to be able to come off as cheeseball Eurotrash for his job so fuck anyone who bags him or Mann for that choice. Jamie Foxx oozes cool all over the place too, Tubbs and Crocket are both street and operational smart. I agree there’s not much emotionally on show but these cats are hardened operatives, what the fuck do these pussy film critics want … Bridget Jones with a beretta? Fuck that.
Whatever, it’s not perfect, some brief moments of the action lack a certain focused edge editting-wise, the plot probably won’t hit you in the guts like Collateral or Heat, the criticisms are valid enough in that way. But it’s shitloads of ultra-stylish cool fun, the three major bad guys are perfectly drawn, the cars and boats kick ass and the gun battles will pop your eyes out.
(For the record I was never into the tv show, my thing was more like Night Rider and Chips, so I can’t compare it.)
