ParticipantThe following question was on the show.
“If you cross the boarder north of the United States, what country are you in?”
Most people would immediately say Canada, right? I stated that Canada would be the correct answer only if you crossed the border from the United States. However, the question did not state what country you are crossing from or what direction you were crossing from. Therefore, is the border north of the United States not also the border south of Canada? If you consider the border to be what it is, a border, then Canada is not necessarily the correct answer.
I found it interesting enough because my room mate’s wife could not see the logic in my answer, “It would depend on the country of departure.”
What do you think?

ParticipantI can definitely see your point, Jerry — but what shocked me that the woman had to rely on her 5th grade counterpart for the answer. It’s no wonder the rest of the world hates us — we have lots of success, but for the most part, we’re idiots.

ParticipantJerry, Jerry, Jerry.
You disappoint me…..Master Bater holds you in such high regard, surely you can do better.
“If you cross the border north of the United States, what country are you in?”
Ms. Truluck’s (my 7th grade English Teacher…lovely woman) voice is ringing in my head right now.
Yes us southerners are taught proper english….we just retain the right to change it into southern-speak
The prepositional phrase of the United States and the adjective north are defining the border being crossed.
Which border is being crossed?
The north one..North of what?
The United States“….what country are you in”
Assuming this interogative fragment is tied to the first phrase then the answer is both The United States of America, and Canada (*singing* Oh Can–ada…thank you for New–Man)
The Question, again is….
“If you cross the border north of the United States, what country are you in?”
NOT
“After you cross the border north of the United States, what country are you in?”So what we have here is a question that can have the subject in 2 places simultaneously, thereby breaking all laws of nature as we know it…..MY GOD MAN!!!
YOU’VE JUST DISCOVERED TELEPORTATION!!!
ALL HAIL JERRY!!!!

ParticipantThis has turned into a subject for the Lo Dimension. I’ve been enlightened.
What if they asked questions like this?
“Would you cross the border between the United States and Canada?”
