Part of it is that while Rii have very similar comedic tastes we have pretty different tastes in drama. My tastes are pretty similar to yours but she doesn’t like anything too brutal. She prefers British police/detective shows, where the deaths aren’t seen, only dealt with afterward. And I don’t watch a lot of TV by myself – Game of Thrones is the only one – so if she’s not into it I don’t make time for it, if she’s busy and I’m left to my own devices I prefer to do something more active.

I SERIOUSLY recommend watching Bebop in the original Japanese though. I know the dub is highly regarded, but I think that’s relative to other dubs, which are shite. I don’t speak Japanese but the performances of the original actors for Spike and Jet are way less corny for me and feel much deeper than the cartoony voice actory stuff of the dub. Faye is maybe the one character who may be better in American.

The World Cup Final is hours away by the way, so I’m going to be in the market for a whole lotta Robby Shows coming up.

I mean … I haven’t even seen The bloody Wire yet, and everyone says that’s literal genius.

Enjoyed both episodes Robby. I feel it only fair to warn you the demands from me for more will increase from next week onward as my mega-roster of World Cup podcasts finishes up.

Aside from Game of Thrones I just haven’t been interested enough in any hour-long shows since Lost to put the time in. It always feels like so much more of a risk with dramas, because if they shit the bed with the ending the rest feels like a waste of time to me. I just can’t watch it like you do, where you can compartmentalize the seasons, or parts of seasons. If an ending is weak – be it of a feature film or of a 7-season TV show – it fucks up the whole deal for me. So I wait until the show is done and if the reports of the ending being good flood in I figure I’ll watch it then. Except then I don’t.

Oh, I got them alright, don’t know why I didn’t do my usual thing of shouting at you that I’d got them.

I always feel like he could use an editor to shape his articles into something more concise and precise (it’s ironic that one of his key points is indulgence when he’s one of the most indulgent pop-culture writers around) but once you dig though the waffle you can often find he has a strong insight or three.

    Have you guys read this?

The Beautiful, Ugly, and Possessive Hearts of Star Wars

Really digs into a lot of what Rob often talks about in terms of audience reaction I think.

No complaints here whenever you end up talking about Star Wars.

Like you I never fell in love with Star Trek anywhere near as much as I fell in love with Star Wars, but whenever I did watch TOS I liked it. Like all the best sci-fi it’s less about sciencey gadgets and more about philosophy and ethics. (At least TOS was, I’ve barely watched any TNG, DS9, Voyager or Enterprise.) Of course it was also about the magical dynamic of the crew, especially the iconic Kirk/Spock/Bones triumvirate.

Actually a better way to explain the difference between the original and dub voices is the originals sound like actors, the dubs sound like “voice actors”. So the dub comes across like an above-average Saturday morning cartoon and the original comes across like Firefly, but cooler.

I’d love to ask Rian Johnson which version he prefers, cause that dude is a big fan.

Hmmm, I see where you went wrong now and frankly I blame myself for not warning you to ignore any dipshit who claims that the Cowboy Bebop dub is really worth a dang. The show is vastly superior with the original Japanese voice actors.

The dub is apparently beloved by many anime fans who first saw the series as children because (1) they were children who didn’t know any better and there’s a nostalgia factor and (2) anime fans have been so beaten down by dubs which are abysmal horseshit that when one comes along which is halfway competent they fall madly in love with it. For peeps like me though, who generally dislike anime and were already post-adolescent when we first saw it, the original Japanese voices are infinitely superior. The original tone of the show – for Spike and Jet especially – is more understated, laconic, dangerous Clint Eastwood/Harrison Ford/Bruce Lee vibe while the dubbed version of the show is more cheesy, corny, goofy, over-acted Bonanza/Back To The Future III.

Bring on the new Star Wars episodes of Hey Everybody It’s The Rob Show With Rob though, I never, ever, ever get tired of them.

Rob! Thanks for doing these two! Sorry it took so long to get to them, every 4 years since 1982 the World Cup has been a tractor beam for my attention so I’ve been hijacked by it for the last couple of weeks.

    • You should know by now you never need to apologise for mulling over your hardcore illness out loud. I get something out of it every time you do, but more importantly it seems to help you process the whole crazy, frustrating deal.
    • I’m with you on almost none of the shows we watched as kids holding up now. Ironically Cheers is the only one which really does, probably because, like you said, it was the more adult 9f the comedies compared to other fun shows like Night Court. MASH is the only other one from back then I can still watch, but even back then it was reruns for us.
    • Did you watch Cowboy Bebop with subs or dubs?
    • We never had SNL on NZ screens when I was a kid so I’ve only ever seen it through adult lenses but having listened to a million Americans on podcasts – mostly comedy – talk about it over the past 13 years it’s always fascinating to me. My exposure was always via films – Blues Brothers, Wayne’s World, Austin Powers etc.

Shit man, 5 mins of ads for 30 mins of content. We watch 22 mins of commercials for an hour TV show. For a Bucho conversion; 30,000 kiwi blinks. Rob “I try to talk as I exhale vape juice vapers” Michaels. Like your vape review about flavors and insight. Yeah people who don’t let people are assholes, especially pickup trucks. And Bucho when are going to see Solo? Rob I agree with about these assholes that didn’t like TLJ, thinking their boycott was going to work but they should go see Solo to send a message to Disney that these are the movies we like. But Disney/LucasFilm is coming out with so much content makes me happy; can’t get enough. And fans should know and remember, from 1984 to 1999 (the dark times), there was not really any Star Wars content. I mean yes, there were books but no movies, no TV shows, video games were ok because of the technology. Dave Filoni. Yes I agree with people that Kathleen Kennedy is a great producer but she is not a creative person. I could go on about how there’s not really cross overs, but Dave Filoni is Star Wars’ Kevin Feige.

Should be seeing Solo this weekend hopefully. Maybe I’ll see it twice this weekend.
