We had some friends from Australia living across the street from us for a while and I had the (dis)pleasure of trying a vegemite sandwich once…Y-U-C-K!
They say that they use it like peanut butter there, so I guess you’d get used to it if you’re force fed it from birth, but what a nasty, salty mess that is. Reminded me of when I used to take a loaf of bread down to my uncle’s salt lick and share a few bites with the deer and elk.
I ate it a lot more when I was a kid and we used to have vegemite or marmite and chip (crisp to you poms) sandwiches. It’s got a bunch of good vitamins in it but if I eat it these days I have to have a big drink of something semi-sweet to wash down the saltiness of it.
Peanut butter and jam (jelly to you ‘mericans) is the best but sometimes peanut butter and banana or chocolate spread goes down a treat in the Bucho kitchen. If there’s custard around maybe custard and maple syrup. Another winner is to put milo (I don’t know if you guys have that, I guess it’s similar to hot chocolate powder or cocoa) on hot melted butter.
