there’s a pretty nice r5 of district 9 floating around. so in honor of this labor day weekend, i thought it would be apropo to celebrate one of the fine tradition of the interwebs (the other being porn) that i shall not name specifically. i’ll just call it the ‘off-site archives’. 😀
so here’s some of the sites i rotate through when i want to check out off-site archives. feel free to share yours as well if you feel inclined.
as you’ll notice, i prefer to let other sites sift through the usenet. i don’t know if i’m just getting old or lazy but i’ve migrated away from torrents as well for the most part. but don’t let that stop you from sharing any of your favorites.
this last link is experiencing some downtime because it was recently sold. it used to be a favorite which is why i still listed it, but it will probably be worthless pretty soon. though nothing new lately its got a good back catalog.
i run the usual adblock/ flashblock stuff but i’m sure there’s some NSFW banners on some of these.

speaking of usenet (assuming the first rule of usenet isn’t still “don’t talk about usenet”) i’m reminded of a quote i once read.
“Usenet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhea; massive, difficult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a source of mind-boggling amounts of excrement when you least expect it.” — Eugene Spafford

That’s a great quote, have never heard/read it. It’s quite true though. Tore rents are what I’ve used for the last couple of years or whatever, mostly because I like to queue stuff up on the Mac Mini and just find it magically done when I’m ready for it. and the irony of it all is that hollywood was effectively built on piracy. piracy of thomas edison’s his film patents.
so think about that the next time the mpaa cries poverty in some new psa. just because someone might archive a nice looking r5 of district 9 doesn’t mean they’re not going to buy the blu-ray when it comes out so get off their back about it.
i love movies but i don’t really like going to the movies. i’ll go see star trek or star wars or transformers. but someone might archive a movie just to decide if its worth a buy or not. it has nothing to do with a decision to see it on the big screen. they archived that workprint of wolverine that came out with unfinished fx and stunt wires showing. then went opening weekend so that they could see the finished product. and right now they have a nice archived copy of the real thing to get them by until the blu-ray comes out in a few weeks.
mpaa, we’re not stupid. you’re not going hungry. you need to adjust your business model and adapt to a changing environment of consumers that want content when we want it and how we want it and don’t want to be slaves to your old analog ways. this is the digital age and you guys need a good old-fashioned degaussing.
